Jun 2 Skagen, Denmark
We arrived at 10:00 AM at Skagen (pronounced (skane), our first port of call. It is a Danish town located at the tip of the Jutland Peninsula. We noticed more than a dozen cargo ships as we approached the harbour. They are waiting for further instruction, additional crew, or more cargo before heading farther east to the Baltics and even Russia. Pilots take the ships along this route.
Sunny, 16°, WINDY!
Our short coach tour took us through this town of about 7500 people. The town began as an old fishing village. Houses then were black with thatched roofs. They were one room houses with a small area at one end for cooking. They had no chimney, just an opening for smoke from cooking to escape. This particular house belonged to a family with six children and two grandparents - in one room!!!!
We continued to drive through the town and in every direction there were the famous yellow houses with red tile roofs. These began to be built in the late 1800’s.
We drove on to the Raabjerg Migrating Dune. This is an interesting phenomenon - sand dunes that migrate about 15 meters per year towards the Baltic Sea. You could walk right out onto the dunes.
If you look closely you can see the top of the dunes in the centre of this photo.
Mary walked a bit farther and took this shot of people walking on the dunes.
Between the 1880 and 1930 Skagen became an area for artists to come for the solitude. In 1937 Karen Blixen came here to write Out of Africa, the basis for the award winning movie starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep
Our last stop was Grenen, where the North and Baltic seas meet.
Dinnef was a hit! We started with Shrimp Cocktail, Caesar Salad, then Mary had Salmon and Dorothy had one of her favourites - Turkey dinner! Dessert was Mocha Slice for Mary and New York Cheesecake with Strawberries for Dorothy. YUM!
Janine Johnson is the entertainer tonight. Hopefully a lively show!
See you tomorrow in Copenhagen!

What a beautiful place. I read your blog about Copenhagen first and can see what a lovely contrast from Skagen. Have fun.
