Jun 7. Tallinn, Estonia
Today we have no planned excursion and instead decided to stay on board. We had a late breakfast and after a light lunch, we ventured off the ship. Mary walked to the shops at the end of the very long pier while I waited near the ship enjoying the fresh air! And I mean ‘fresh’! The wind around the ship was so strong it blew the sanitizer station at the gangway over!
Like Latvia and Lithuania, the Baltic republic of Estonia has survived a turbulent history. For 51 years, Estonia remained a pawn in the Soviet empire, until the freedom movement led to independence for the Baltic Republics in 1991. Once a member of the historic Hanseatic League, Tallinn is the political, commercial and cultural center of Estonia.
Tallinn is noted for its Medieval architecture, cobblestone streets and Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
We’re taking it easy for the rest of the afternoon. I wonder what tasty dinner we’ll have tonight? Mary had a steak and Dorothy had Salmon. The delicious desserts were Mocha Trifle for the chocoholic and Lemon Meringue Cheesecake for the lemon lover!
The entertainment is ODY C!?!? It looks like it may be for a much younger audience? But we’ll see!! Whatever happened to ‘music’?
We are headed for Sweden! Clocks back one hour tonight! Stay tuned!

Tallinn is such a pretty city. I loved reading your blog and learning a bit more. I didn't remember all that from my visit!
ReplyDeleteI must say I don’t know a lot about the history of this part of the world. It has been an education!
