Nov 4 - Albany

Nov 4 - Albany

We arrived this morning at this historic port.  King George Sound was the gathering place for the Australia and New Zealand ships to depart on their mission to join World War I in Europe and The Middle East.

Our tour took us first to visit Albany Wind Farm in the Torndirrup National Park Situated on the edge of a cliff overlooking the coast, this eco-friendly farm consists of twelve 1,800-kilowatt wind turbines, each 213 feet tall with enormous 115-foot-long blades. The wind turbines are some of the biggest in the world and the largest to be installed in the southern hemisphere.  Wind turbines provide 80% of Albany’s power.

These are the descriptions at the site.  I think if you click on the photo it will enlarge so you can read the information if you are interested.

From there we had a city drive through Albany.  The guide pointed out that this city of about 40,000 has no traffic lights; instead there are 57 roundabouts!!!  Most of the homes are made of brick veneer, and we didn’t see any buildings higher than two or three storeys.  From there we went to Mt. Clarence Lookout where we had more spectacular views including  Princess Royal Harbour and King George Sound.

The main feature at this stop was the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial.  Evidence of Australia’s respect for their war heroes is evident everywhere.

Our last stop was the
National ANZAC Centre , an interactive display showing the involvement of the Australian and New Zealand troops who joined the conflict in 1916-1918.

We returned to the ship and as we wait to go to dinner the Captain announced that he had received a call from the Ship’s Dr and our departure will be delayed due to a medical situation.

Tonight we’re looking forward to the Scared Weird Little Guys in the theatre; they were really entertaining a few nights ago and this is to be a new show!

We’ve had a nice day in Albany with perfect weather.  We’ll be anchored off shore in tomorrow’s port, Busselton.  The weather in Margaret River doesn’t look as promising but we’ll be on a bus for our tour so we’ll be fine!

Stay tuned

  1. It looks beautiful. Hope that you weren’t delayed for too long and that the medical situation wasn’t anything too serious. .
