Oct 3 - Maui

 Oct 3 - Maui

We’re here…. On another beautiful day in beautiful Maui!

Our excursion took us by bus to the Maui Tropical Plantation.  On the way our guide talked about how cane is no longer a profitable crop so many cane fields have been replaced.  An example is a huge acreage that we passed that was purchased by a Canadian developer and replanted with lemon and lime trees, avocados, onions etc; the produce is kept on the island to benefit Hawaiians.

To the west lies the village of Lahaina.  Sadly we were not able to go to Lahaina on this trip. It would be heart-breaking to see the devastation caused by the fires in 2023.  The village has been cleared and new housing has started.  So many lives and livelihoods were lost to this tragedy.

Off the west coast whales are migrating from Alaska.  By January young are born; a  baby can grow up to 150 pounds / a day 7 pounds an hour!

It was amazing to hear the statistics about Hawaii’s green efforts.  Solar accounts for  15% of Maui’s power and wind turbines another 17% ( that explains the boatload of wind turbines we saw as we entered the harbour in Oahu yesterday!). Our guide told us how much less expensive this power is and the goal is to be totally green by 2045!

We reached our first stop, the Maui Tropical Plantation, and boarded a tram which would take us on a narrated tour through the 60 acre plantation to see the various crops and a cocoanut husking demo.

                                          Papaya

                                                Cocoanut husking demo

                                      Macadamia nut
  Plumeria

After leaving the plantation we went to the Iao Valley State Park to view the Iao Needle, an extinct volcano. Some of us strolled the path that offers stunning views of the lush valley and leads to a scenic overlook of The Needle, the sacred volcanic

pinnacle that rises from the valley floor.

Overall it was an informative tour.

Another show tonight - a magician!!  And then we begin a string of 5 sea days!!

I never can figure out how they do that stuff!

Until tomorrow….
