Apr 17 - 18 Franschoek

Apr 17. Last day in Cape Town and on to Franschoek.

I’m giving you a bit of homework in this post.  I couldn’t possibly give you all the information about what we did today, so click on the blue links in the text below as you read about another fantastic day!  Have I told you how fabulous our tour is??😁

We had to say good-bye to the wonderful people at Blackheath.  This boutique hotel was a treasure!  On our departure from Cape Town we made a stop at Bo-Kaap, a colourful neighbourhood that reflected the Dutch architecture.  Ronnie and Dee took us to a spice shop ( think Bulk Barn) with hundreds of different items.

On our way out of town we passed Christiaan Barnard Hospital, named after the famous dr who did the first heart transplant.  Think of how many lives have been extended since 1967.  Here is a link to that
story.

Onward to the Winelands!  We went to the Helderberg Wine area, an upscale community of mostly retired people.  The winery we visited was the Vergelegen Wine Estate.

Oh my!  We were welcomed to the grand entrance to the Manor House by the fragrance from the unbelievable Rose Garden!  61 varieties!

In addition to the rose garden we encountered Sylvia ( felt like chenille)

and hydrangeas

We went to the wine tasting area (not to worry - it’s noon somewhere in the world!  LOL)

to try two white wines, their Premier Sauvignon Blanc  2022, and GVB, a blend of sauvignon Blanc & Sémillon, and two reds - a Shiraz, and GVB a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Cabernet Franc.

Our next stop was Morgenster winery & olive oil tasting.  Wow!  4 oils to try and one balsamic vinegar, all accompanied by little pieces of bread, crackers, green and black olives, and olive pastes.

Then came the wines!  red, white, rosé!  This was another great experience!

And then Lunch at the Postcard Cafe at Stark-Condé.  A beautiful setting in which to enjoy a fabulous lunch!

Our last stop was at LaFontaine Boutique Hotel, our home for two nights.

Apr 18 Visit to Cheetah Farm

We had a more leisurely start to the day!  Departure at 9:00!  We drove to the Cheetah Farm Outreach Programme where we learned about the animals, with the main  focus on the Cheetah.

They have several generations of cheetah’s.  There were many interesting facts - they can see clearly 3-5 km away!  They live to about age 12 (some longer). We were able to get close and pat Romeo!  There are very strict rules about being close - handlers must be present, only approach from behind, pat on the back with a firm touch, no leaning into their space. it was really exciting to be standing next to a cheetah and patting him!

After our visit ended, we went to Stellenbosch to explore, and for some of our group to buy another suitcase!!!!  Shopping!!!!  LOL

Back to the hotel where we will enjoy dinner tonight and then go pack to head to the CapeTown airport early tomorrow morning!

What a day!

Next report in a few days!!!  From Kruger National Park!!

  1. You should have been wearing your cheetah print jacket with the cheetah. What a great experience for both of you. They are not small cats. I see you loved the wine tasting and the olive oils would have been right up your alley. I did my homework and did the readings. I love that you put the links into the blog. Great work.
