 Sep 22 - Würzburg, Germany

                                          Fun in Würtzburg!

It promises to be a beautiful day in Würzburg .  Although the temperature is less than 10° this morning, the sun is shining and it will warm up as the day goes on.

Today our excursion was a tour of some of the rooms at the Würzburg Residenz. a UNESCO World Heritage Site

***I will ‘borrow’ some of the text for today’s blog as we were not allowed to take photographs inside the Residenz.***

The Residenz, a vast compound near the center of the town was commissioned by two prince-bishops, the brothers Johann Philipp Franz and Friedrich Karl von Schönborn. Several architects, including Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch, supervised the construction between 1720 and 1744, in imitation of the Palace of Versaillesbut it is mainly associated with the name of Balthasar Neumann, the creator of its famous Baroque staircase. The palace suffered severe damage in the British bombing of March 1945, but has been completely rebuilt.

The Grand Staircase featured a fresco above it, the largest in the world apparently.  It represented the Four Continents (as they were known at that time) .  It was interesting to see, as Balthasar Neumann also did the fresco we saw at the Maria Limbach church yesterday.

The rooms we saw were incredibly ornate.

After the Residenz Tour we came back to the ship to spend an afternoon at leisure, snapping a couple of photos along the way!
